Guidelines urged for children on heart, blood vessel damage

New federal health guidelines call on pediatricians to check children's blood pressure at age 3 and to check for possible heart and blood vessel damage if the blood pressure is high. The recommendations are in response to the growing obesity problem and, with an estimated 16% of American children now overweight, the risk for both high blood pressure and adult-onset diabetes is greater among children.
