Companies to use stem cells in discovery of new drugs

Two firms have agreed to sell their stem cell products to pharmaceutical companies, indicating that the technology may prove useful in discovering treatments for various diseases. California Stem Cells will supply neural cells over the next year to BioFocus DPI, a subsidiary of Belgian drugmaker Galapagos NV, for use in developing medicines for Lou Gehrig's disease. CellDesign has signed deals with four companies seeking new drugs for conditions such as schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease.
