FAA to move up mandatory windshield inspections for 757s

The FAA says it will issue an order "as fast as possible" for airlines to inspect window heaters on Boeing jets following a cockpit fire on Sunday that forced an emergency landing by a United Airlines B-757. The NTSB counts at least six similar incidents since 2004 and has recommended redesigned window heaters for four different models of Boeing aircraft. The FAA in the past has issued voluntary service bulletins calling for inspections, but it now plans to issue a mandatory airworthiness directive requiring airlines to inspect the heating systems and replace them if necessary.
