Sen. Collins of Maine wants closer look at ethanol

Sen. Susan Collins says ethanol is being touted as a viable solution to reduce reliance on foreign oil. Although ethanol does reduce harmful air emissions, it can also damage older and smaller engines and fuel systems, with lawn mowers, chainsaws and weed trimmers as some of the most susceptible, she writes. As a result, Collins introduced the Mid-Level Ethanol Blends bill, which requires the EPA Science Advisory Board to carefully evaluate the evidence presented about ethanol's performance in the current inventory of engines.
