Famed Fla. steakhouse struggles to live up to local, organic claims

Bern's Steak House in Tampa, Fla., began cultivating a reputation for locally grown organic produce after founder Bern Laxer started an organic farm in the 1970s, but the eatery's field has lain fallow this year as owners transition to a new parcel of growing land. Only about 20% of the produce Bern's currently buys is organic, despite marketing claims to the contrary. "Once we get through the first growing season, we'll adjust the story appropriately," said owner David Laxer.
