Chinese hackers back in action following brief hiatus, officials say

A unit of the Chinese People's Liberation Army identified by intelligence officials as the source of a series of cyberattacks against U.S. targets has recommenced its efforts after a short period of silence following its outing by security experts. According to the security firm Mandiant, which helped expose the attacks roughly three months ago, Shanghai-based Unit 61398 is operating at between 60% and 70% of its prior capacity and is quietly infiltrating some of the same companies it targeted before. "They dialed it back for a little while, though other groups that also wear uniforms didn't even bother to do that. I think you have to view this as the new normal," said Kevin Mandia, chief executive of Mandiant.
