Critical-illness insurance gains popularity

Growth in the number of consumer-driven health plans has prompted an increase in the sales of critical-illness insurance, which many use as a supplement to their plans, according to experts. Sales of critical-illness policies rose 20% in 2011 to $243 million, according to Eastbridge Consulting Group. An Eastbridge report predicts that critical-illness insurance could be the best-selling voluntary benefit for the next two to three years.
