Digital music sales benefit from TV awards shows

Music awards shows on broadcast TV are proving to be a potent tool to boost digital music sales, with Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber among recent beneficiaries of the trend. For example, Swift and Tim McGraw's performance of "Highway Don't Care" at April's Academy of Country Music Awards on CBS led to a 42% increase in sales of the single. "We have managers and labels calling us all the time ... because we live in this instant world now, and you can download it instantly," said Allen Shapiro, chief executive of award-show producer Dick Clark Productions.
