Experts: Sunscreen ratings mislead

Terms such as "waterproof" or "SPF 100" lead consumers to use sunscreen lotions with too much confidence, some consumer watch experts warn, not reapplying the product as often as needed, and figuring they can stay out in the sun a long time. "The high SPF numbers are just a gimmick," said Marianne Berwick, an epidemiology professor at the University of New Mexico. "Most people really don't need more than an SPF 30 and they should reapply it every couple of hours."
