Food producers face prospect of 50 GMO labeling laws, ex-FDA official says

Labeling for genetically modified food is coming, and many in the industry believe it would be better to work with the FDA on a national law than be forced to address different laws in all 50 states, says David Acheson, former associate commissioner of foods for the FDA. One question the FDA will have to answer is whether information should be included only if it is a public health issue or because the public has a right to additional information on the food it purchases, he said. Vermont is considering GMO labeling legislation, and Congress is considering a similar bill.
