Lawmakers seek to ease sequester restriction on FDA user fees

FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg has raised concerns that subjecting the medical-device user fees to sequestration cuts could hamper the agency's ability to meet its performance goals. AdvaMed's senior executive vice president for government affairs, J.C. Scott, echoed such concerns, saying his group believes the FDA "should be properly funded and supports correcting the language in the sequester to prevent any further restriction on FDA's access to industry user fees." Some legislators are drafting language to create more flexibility for the FDA to access those funds.
