Senate is set to debate farm bill

The Senate is scheduled to begin debate today on a farm bill with about $100 billion in annual spending, about $2.4 billion less than the existing legislation, with about 80% going toward food aid. The House is slated to consider a separate bill next month. Both measures would cut $5 billion annually in direct payments and trim funding from the food stamp program.
