Updated BP goals to set simplified treatment target

An upcoming update to hypertension guidelines likely will set a treatment target of 140/90 mm Hg for everyone but older adults, experts said at a meeting of the American Society of Hypertension. A "one-size-fits-most" goal has worked well, said Dr. Raymond Townsend of the University of Pennsylvania, who reviewed the evidence being considered by the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure update, or JNC 2013.
