Wash. led states in renewable energy use in 2011, EIA says

Washington outpaced California and Texas in the use of renewable energy in 2011, according to data from the Energy Information Administration. Hydroelectric dams provided 67% of the country's total renewable power in 2011, while wind supplied 25%, geothermal 4.5% and solar 3.5%, the agency said. State legislatures' mandates to power utilities remain crucial to the growth of renewables, said Rhone Resch of the Solar Energy Industries Association.
