Burd gets 83% of vote at Safeway shareholder meeting

After a strong majority of shareholders yesterday voted in support of Safeway Chairman and Chief Executive Steven A. Burd, he said the outcome was a "strong expression of investor confidence and support." Analysts say this year's highly publicized shareholder votes illustrate companies are more willing to listen to investors and negotiate aspects of corporate governance, with one saying: "These aren't just meaningless protest votes anymore. They are leading to meaningful change."
