Jobless claims unexpectedly soar

New claims for jobless benefits increased by 25,000 to a seasonally adjusted 471,000 for the week ended May 15, according to the Labor Department. An economist said there were no special factors at work to force the increase, unlike in early April, when jobless claims surged due to seasonal and holiday hiring.
