Report: Retailers ramp up competition for prepared-food customers

Food retailers have improved the quality and variety of their prepared-food offerings, creating serious competition for restaurants, according to a new Technomic report. Grocery chains including Kroger and Wegmans have branched out beyond deli staples such as rotisserie chicken to include "restaurant quality" offerings, and some have enhanced sit-down areas to encourage on-site dining.
