Being a 9-1-1 dispatcher is a career, not a stepping stone

The duties of 9-1-1 dispatchers have expanded so the job is now considered a profession instead of a stepping stone to becoming a police officer, says Linda Luehring, executive director of SEECOM, which provides dispatching services for agencies in McHenry County, Ill. Luehring says that in addition to sending out first responders, dispatchers now provide medical and fire instruction and gather background information on in-home hazards.
