Exxon to refocus algae biofuel production research

After nearly four years without viable results, Exxon Mobil is refocusing its research with Synthetic Genomics. The next research angle will include "more comprehensive changes to algae metabolism so that they can realize economical levels of oil production," according to James Flatt, Synthetic Genomics' chief technology officer. Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson said in a March television interview that algae biofuel production may not succeed for at least another 25 years.
