F-35 executes first vertical takeoff

A version of Lockheed Martin's F-35 fighter jet for the Marines made its first vertical takeoff Monday. The first delivery of planes from the program, which is billions over budget, is expected in 2015. The "complex engineering feat ... uses engine thrust vectoring by redirecting exhaust to the ground to achieve the vertical lift," writes W.J. Hennigan.
