IC Insights: AMD fell to fourth place in 2012 microprocessor sales

The x86-architecture stalwarts in the microprocessor market, Intel and Advanced Micro Devices, both lost revenue share last year to ARM-based processors from a variety of vendors, according to IC Insights. AMD, long the second-place supplier of processors, fell behind Qualcomm and Samsung Electronics -- which makes the custom processors for Apple's mobile devices -- in 2012 sales, the market research firm reports.
