Immune system cells may be reason salamanders regenerate limbs

Macrophage cells within the immune system of a salamander may be responsible for its ability to regenerate limbs, scientists at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia have discovered. When those cells were absent, the salamanders could not grow new limbs. "We need to know exactly what salamanders do and how they do it well, so we can reverse-engineer that into human therapies," said lead study author James Godwin.
