For stronger security, try a password strength meter

Metering software that gauges and provides a visual representation of the strength of user passwords can go a long way toward improving the security of important data, according to a first-of-its-kind study by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, University of British Columbia and Microsoft Research. "We performed a laboratory experiment to examine whether these meters influenced users' password selections when they were forced to change their real passwords. We observed that the presence of meters yielded significantly stronger passwords," the researchers said.
