Sugar reform puts candy-makers and sugar producers at odds

Confectioners, including Baltimore-based Goetze's and Wockenfuss, are urging lawmakers to overturn a policy of sugar subsidies that keeps sugar prices artificially high in the U.S. "It's just hurting the smaller businesses," through competitive disadvantage, said Paul Wockenfuss, owner and president of Wockenufuss Candies. The Senate may vote today on an amendment that would reduce sugar subsidies.
