Taiwan researchers develop synthetic materials for SSL

To replace rare earths for solid-state lighting applications, Ching-Fuh Lin of National Taiwan University has developed nanoparticle materials that are said to be less expensive, easier to color balance and more convenient. "We are merging light and electricity by designing environmentally friendly zinc-oxide alloys, with particle sizes in the 10s of nanometer range, that perform surface emission of light, making them a viable candidate for replacing the rare earths used today," he said.
