HHS plan details Medicare, Medicaid incentives tied to EMR adoption

The HHS has unveiled details about a program under the stimulus package that authorizes Medicare and Medicaid incentives for the "meaningful use" of electronic medical records. The CMS, which is expected to get $145 million annually for fiscal years 2009 through 2015 to fund the program, will start giving Medicare incentives to qualified hospitals in October 2010. Medicare payments to doctors, as well as Medicaid incentives to hospitals and physicians, are set to begin in January 2011.
