Column: Why L.A. should fund school librarians

Los Angeles officials have issued layoff notices to 86 teacher-librarians, saying they do not teach and are not protected by seniority. However, one teacher-librarian, Rosemarie Bernier, says she teaches digital literacy, research and other skills. "The idea is to help them get the information they need to put their ideas in their own words," Bernier said of students. "They learn to stand on the shoulders of the great scientists, philosophers and mathematicians."
