How a writing lesson helps eighth-graders address stereotypes

Alabama middle-school teacher Ambra Johnson had students in her eighth-grade language arts class create a wall of "I Am" statements as a way to get them thinking about and challenging stereotypes, and as a preview to reading "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton. In this blog post by eighth-graders Devin Acklin, Joyce Jung, Justin Locke and Sara Thorsness, the students describe the project in which they wrote their "I Am" statements on strips of paper to hang on a wall, and shared them with each other in school and with followers on Twitter.
