National Science Foundation rejects lawmaker's call for reviewer comments

Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, last month asked the National Science Foundation to divulge reviewer comments for five social science projects that are being funded by the agency, but the NSF has rejected that request. The NSF says reviewers are promised anonymity and that maintaining their confidentiality is of paramount importance. However, the NSF said it could explain, in general terms, how the five projects align with its mission, and acting Director Cora Marrett has offered to describe the agency's selection criteria.
