Senate panel approves immigration bill

The Senate Judiciary Committee approved a wide-ranging overhaul of U.S. immigration law in a bipartisan 13-5 vote. The version sent to the full Senate includes changes backed by Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, aimed at making it easier for high-tech companies to bring in skilled foreign workers and obtain H-1B visas for positions they are unable to fill with Americans.
