Incompatible software, cost stand in way of EMR usage

Health care providers have been slow to adopt electronic medical record technology, with the cost of new technology and retraining staff said to be big barriers for many small practices, according to David Brailer, the federal government's health-information technology coordinator. In addition, incompatibilities in software programs made by more than 100 vendors hamper providers' ability to exchange patient data with other providers or hospitals.
