Texas board gives preliminary OK to new English standards

The Texas state board of education gave its tentative approval Thursday to new English language arts curriculum standards, and was slated to issue its final approval of the new curriculum today. The board opted Thursday to approve standards developed by an outside company in lieu of an English language arts curriculum proposal drafted by a board-appointed group of Texas teachers.
