Texas authorities issue quarantine on fruit fly fears

Authorities quarantined an 85-square-mile fruit-growing area in South Texas after spotting larval Mexican fruit flies, a tiny pest with the power to devastate the state's fruit industry. Quarantine is one of several methods that have been used to fight the flies, including the Agriculture Department's release of sterile males to stop the reproductive cycle.
