Total eyes additional Texas cracker to capitalize on cheap shale gas

Total is considering the construction of an ethane cracker in Texas that would be connected with an existing cracker at Port Arthur co-owned with BASF. Meanwhile, the existing cracker can now use ethane instead of naphtha as feedstock, this article notes. "In response to petroleum product price hikes and the emergence of abundant gas resources, we adapted the steam cracker to give it flexibility and maintain its competitiveness," said Patrick Pouyanne, president of Total Refining & Chemicals.
