Beverage companies continue to fight soda taxes

With at least 20 states and cities proposing taxes on nonalcoholic beverages so far this year, industry officials are getting more organized in their opposition. The American Beverage Association spent $18.9 million on lobbying last year, compared with about $668,000 in 2008, and is considering a referendum in Washington state, one of the few places a tax was approved.
