Demand for air medical transport services, especially in rural areas, is increasing as baby boomers age, leading Sierra Providence Health Network in Texas to offer a 24/7 helicopter set up as a flying ICU. Hospitals with trauma units are creating helipads to accommodate air ambulances, even though payment and reimbursement issues for air transport are uncertain.
