Small modular reactors are less likely to suffer from a total power loss that was among the main causes of the nuclear crisis in Japan, developers said during the Platts Small Modular Reactors conference. NuScale Power's 45-megawatt units depend on natural circulation for backup cooling instead of coolant pumps, said Chief Marketing Officer Bruce Landrey.
