Some L.A. schools try tying standardized test scores to course grades

Thirty-nine Los Angeles high schools are testing a voluntary program that makes students eligible for higher grades if they improve their scores on standardized tests. Traditionally, the tests have no effect on grades or college acceptance and test scores decline after elementary school. Officials say the voluntary program is intended to motivate students to improve their test scores, which could be used to assess teachers under a proposed evaluation system.
