Novelists and script writers include real colleges in fictional story lines to draw upon their reputations. The college can be a clue to personality traits -- or the social identity -- of characters. Colleges "show up in novels and stories to suggest the ghosts that might be lingering in a character's life," said John Gregory Brown, an English professor at Sweet Briar College.
