Advocates question pension-law exemptions

Church-affiliated organizations are eligible to receive exemptions from federal pension laws that aim to protect consumers, but some advocates say these exemptions are often improperly awarded by the Internal Revenue Service, Mark Miller writes. Last month, the IRS revoked an exemption that had enabled a New Jersey hospital center to drop out of the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corp. shortly before going bankrupt.
