Device turns iPhone into biosensor for fieldwork

A photonic crystal and optical components are part of a product that can turn an iPhone into a biosensor that detects toxins, proteins, bacteria, viruses and other molecules. The development by researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign should be particularly useful in fieldwork, leveraging the phone's GPS capability to geographically trace the extent and spread of contaminants, according to Brian Cunningham, a professor of bioengineering and electrical and computer engineering at the university.
