Housing and employment data point to strengthening U.S. economy

Labor and housing data suggest the economy is slowly but steadily recovering. The Labor Department said initial jobless claims last week decreased 23,000, to a seasonally adjusted 340,000. The Commerce Department said sales of new single-family homes increased 2.3% in April. The median price rose 14.9% compared with April 2012.
