Pigment gene mutation is credited with producing white tigers

The mutation of one pigment gene called SLC45A2 is responsible for the white coat of some tigers. Researchers mapped the genomes of three tigers in captivity to find the mutation in the gene that also produces lighter color in European people, chickens and some mice. Researchers are unsure how the mutation mutes red and yellow pigments, but leaves black active, resulting in stripes.
