Pumping grout and concrete into a nearly 5-mile-long, 6-inch-diameter unused natural gas pipeline in Beloit, Wis., was a cost-effective solution to seal it. To accomplish this, the contractor used a Putzmeister BSA 14000 HP-D trailer-mounted concrete pump to pump 133 cubic yards into the 4.8-mile-long pipe. "It’s hard to comprehend, but five miles is a really long journey when pumping," said Scott Schmied, service manager and pump operator for Illinois-based Original Concrete Pumping. "However, the key was ensuring a constant, uninterrupted flow of the mix being pumped in the pipeline when going these long distances."
