Ten openly LGBT elected and appointed officials were honored this week by the White House as "Harvey Milk Champions of Change." The officials were nominated for the honor by the American public. The event, held on Milk's birthday, featured a keynote from Stuart Milk, the nephew of the slain civil rights leader. Honorees included California state Sen. Ricardo Lara, Georgia state Rep. Simone Bell and Mayor Mike Gin of Redondo Beach, Calif.
