California Dreyer's plant makes 7% of nation's ice cream

A $100-million expansion in the past year of Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream Holdings Inc. plant in Bakersfield, Calif., will double the company's output from that location. California is selling record amounts of milk, butter, ice cream and whey protein concentrate, up 34% in 2004. Industry tracker AC Nielsen reports that prepackaged ice cream sales in stores outside of Wal-Mart topped $4.3 billion last year, up 2.7%.
