Localities, telecom vendors work for stimulus funds

Local governments in Maryland are pooling their allotted share of broadband-stimulus funds to create fiber-optic networks themselves instead of hiring private contractors, according to a published report. Telecom-equipment makers are also trying to be creative to win stimulus money. They're working with municipalities that are planning to develop broadband projects to tap into $27.5 billion earmarked for infrastructure upgrades.
