Telecoms to link eight Asian nations through undersea cable

Asian telecoms from eight of the continent's biggest markets will get together to build the Asia-Pacific Gateway, an 8,000-kilometer fiber-optic cable with an initial capacity of 4 terabytes per second, the group announced Monday, adding that they hope to begin service by mid-to-late 2011. Japan's NTT Communications also disclosed that it will buy undersea-cable operator Pacific Crossing in order to handle the growing demand for bandwidth between Japan and the U.S.
