Autoimmune disease rates double every 20 years, expert says

Autoimmune disorders such as gluten intolerance are increasing worldwide in developed areas and double every 20 years or so, according to Stefano Guandalini, founder and medical director of the University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center. He says the hygiene theory, which says that society is too clean and doesn't give the body's immune system enough stimulation, is a popular one given for the increasing prevalence.
