Hawaii adopts plan to end teacher furloughs for next school year

Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle announced a deal to end the state's controversial school furloughs for next school year through a four-part plan that includes a $10 million bank loan, $57.2 million from the state's hurricane-relief fund and a reduction in the number of noninstructional days for teachers. Hawaii schools lost 17 school days to teacher furloughs during the 2009-10 school year, which was the shortest in the country.
